Beat — Adjusted EPS $0.35 vs ~$0.30 consensus
Metallus earnings show improving margins and defense demand, but revenue missed consensus and planned shutdowns will pressure Q4 EBITDA.
Metallus is a specialty-metals producer trying to shift its growth mix toward aerospace and defense while improving profitability through pricing, product mix and targeted capacity investments. The second-quarter story was already moving in that direction: order-book growth supported stronger second-half demand, and the company expected third-quarter adjusted EBITDA to be modestly higher than the prior quarter.
Underlying profitability beat the market’s bar, but the top line did not. Adjusted EPS was $0.35 versus published consensus of about $0.30, while net sales of $337.2 million came in below the roughly $345.2 million revenue estimate. The quarter’s $34.5 million adjusted EBITDA was also meaningfully above Q2’s $29.0 million and the prior-year quarter’s $29.0 million. The earnings improvement was driven mainly by price and mix, not by volume: shipments fell 5% sequentially, with automotive and energy weaker while aerospace and defense shipments increased.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (Financial Summary) | $337.2M (-1.0%) | $305.9M | $345.2M |
| Adjusted EPS (Adjusted net income reconciliation) | $0.35 (+29.6%) | $0.27 | $0.30 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (EBITDA reconciliation) | $34.5M (+19.0%) | $29.0M | |
| Ship tons (Financial Summary) | 165,800 (-5.0%) | 163,100 | |
| Net cash from operations (Cash Flow statement) | $6.8M (-69.1%) | $22.0M |
The aerospace-and-defense transition is gaining commercial traction, but this filing adds less new information than the headline suggests. Metallus reached its $250 million annualized aerospace-and-defense sales run rate and disclosed the $125 million initial DLA purchase order, but the DLA contract and initial order were announced on September 29, before this earnings release. The contract therefore reinforces visibility rather than creating a fresh surprise; the real new evidence is that aerospace shipments and mix helped offset weaker automotive and energy demand.
Near-term earnings momentum now runs into a predictable seasonal setback. Management expects fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA to be below Q3, with high-single-digit sequentially lower shipments, slightly weaker price/mix and a planned shutdown expected to reduce EBITDA by approximately $10 million to $15 million versus Q3. That is not a deterioration in the long-term order-book story, but it does mean the next quarter will look worse operationally even as lead times extend into Q2 2027.
Cash conversion remains the softer part of the quarter. Operating cash flow was only $6.8 million and free cash flow was negative $6.3 million as inventory increased to support demand, while cash fell to $98.6 million from $156.7 million at year-end. Liquidity remained substantial at $388.7 million, so this is more a working-capital drag than an immediate funding problem.
Bottom line: This was a modestly encouraging quarter for the business: adjusted earnings and margins beat expectations, and defense mix continues to improve. But the revenue miss, weaker volumes and expected Q4 shutdown hit keep it from being a clean upside revision to the story.```
