Beat — Adjusted EPS $1.65 vs ~$1.56 consensus; FY free-cash-flow guide $750-$800M
Celanese earnings narrowly beat expectations, while stronger cash generation lifted 2026 free-cash-flow guidance despite lower sales and lingering leverage.
Celanese is in a self-help and deleveraging phase after the large Mobility & Materials acquisition, using cost reductions, portfolio sales, mix improvement and growth projects to rebuild earnings quality. Its 2026 plan centers on cash generation and targeted growth in higher-value Engineered Materials applications, while the Acetyl Chain provides more resilient cash earnings.
The quarter was a narrow earnings beat, not a broad operating breakout. Adjusted EPS of $1.65 exceeded the published consensus of about $1.56, while revenue of $2.56 billion fell short of roughly $2.62 billion. The result was helped by commercial execution and mix, but sequential sales declined 7% and operating EBITDA fell to $548 million from $649 million in the second quarter.
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior outlook | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS (Financial Highlights) | $1.65 | $1.34 | $1.56 |
| Net sales (Financial Highlights) | $2,556M | $2,419M | $2,620M |
| Adjusted EBIT (Financial Highlights) | $367M | $326M | |
| Operating EBITDA (Financial Highlights) | $548M | $517M | |
| Free cash flow (Financial Highlights) | $461M | $375M | |
| FY adjusted EPS outlook (Outlook) | $6.00-$6.25 | ||
| FY free cash flow outlook (Outlook) | $750-$800M |
Cash generation is the clearest improvement in the story. Operating cash flow reached $538 million and free cash flow $461 million, with year-to-date free cash flow at $604 million. Management raised the full-year free-cash-flow outlook to $750-$800 million, a meaningful step for a company still carrying substantial debt.
The earnings outlook is better than the market had been modeling, but the balance-sheet repair is unfinished. Full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $6.00-$6.25 is above the roughly $5.63 published consensus, and the company expects year-end net debt-to-operating EBITDA of approximately 4.7x. That supports the deleveraging narrative, but 4.7x leverage remains elevated and the quarter still showed normalizing demand and sequential weakness in both businesses.
The strategic actions add support, but most are medium-term rather than immediate earnings drivers. The Nutrinova stake sale should provide approximately $152 million of cash, while Engineered Materials projects in Asia and Europe are scheduled for commercialization in the first half of 2027. The December 9 investor event may clarify whether those initiatives can materially improve the post-acquisition earnings profile.
Bottom line: This advances Celanese’s recovery story modestly: earnings beat expectations and cash flow improved enough to lift the outlook, but weaker sales and still-high leverage keep it from being a decisive reset of the business narrative.
