Corebridge earnings meet estimates as core trends soften

In line — Operating EPS $1.22 vs ~$1.22–$1.23 consensus

Corebridge earnings met the market’s EPS bar, but weaker underlying income and sharply lower premiums and deposits temper the headline.

Corebridge is a large retirement-solutions and insurance provider preparing to combine with Equitable; shareholders approved the merger in July 2026, while regulatory clearance and closing preparations remain underway.

The headline cleared the earnings bar, but only narrowly. Operating EPS rose to $1.22 from $0.96 and was essentially in line with the published consensus of roughly $1.22–$1.23. Reported adjusted after-tax operating income also increased 5%, but that improvement was not broad-based.

Underlying profitability softened beneath the reported gain. Excluding variable investment income and notable items, APTOI fell 9%, reflecting lower base spread income and higher expenses; that is a weaker read on recurring operating momentum than the 4% headline increase implies. 〔0〕

Sales were the clearest business setback. Premiums and deposits fell 29% year over year, or 19% excluding transactional activity, mainly because fixed-index annuity sales declined. Higher RILA deposits and out-of-plan fixed-annuity sales helped, but did not offset the broader volume pressure.

GAAP net income was inflated by items the operating measure removes. Net income jumped to $1.44 billion from $144 million, but the change was largely driven by favorable realized gains tied to Fortitude Re and market-risk benefits rather than a comparable improvement in the ongoing business. 〔1〕 The Equitable merger update is constructive but largely a continuation of the already-public transaction process, not a new strategic catalyst; the filing adds Day 1 preparation and more than $100 million of identified synergies, while regulatory approval is still pending.

Bottom line: Corebridge delivered an earnings result that met expectations, but the quality of the quarter was weaker than the headline EPS suggests. Lower recurring earnings momentum and falling sales leave the business story slightly worse, even as merger preparation advances. [^1]

[^1]: The merger was already approved by shareholders and remains subject to regulatory and other closing conditions.
