Miss — Non-GAAP diluted EPS $4.76 vs ~$4.82 consensus; revenue $3.44B vs ~$3.42B
Vertex earnings show strong revenue diversification and higher guidance, but EPS missed consensus as Crinetics integration and pipeline investment pushed costs sharply higher.
Vertex entered this quarter as a cystic-fibrosis cash generator trying to build additional commercial pillars in acute pain, cell and gene therapy, rare endocrine disease and kidney disease; the Crinetics acquisition was already announced to add endocrine medicines, while povetacicept's November 30, 2026 FDA decision was the next major renal milestone.
Revenue execution was ahead of the bar, but not dramatically so. Third-quarter revenue reached $3.44 billion, up 12% year over year, versus an available published consensus of roughly $3.42 billion. The mix is becoming more diversified: ALYFTREK revenue rose to $705.8 million from $247.0 million, while CASGEVY and JOURNAVX together contributed $157.5 million. The filing says, “Total revenue increased 12% to $3.44 billion compared to the third quarter of 2025.”
| Figure | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Consensus / prior guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue (Financial Highlights) | $3,440.8M (+11.9%) | $3,076.4M | ~$3,420M |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS (Non-GAAP results) | $4.76 (-0.8%) | $4.80 | ~$4.82 |
| ALYFTREK revenue (Product revenues) | $705.8M (+185.7%) | $247.0M | |
| TRIKAFTA/KAFTRIO revenue (Product revenues) | $2,436.9M (-8.2%) | $2,653.6M | |
| FY 2026 revenue guidance (Full Year 2026 Financial Guidance) | $13.15B-$13.25B | $13.10B-$13.20B |
The earnings miss reflects the cost of building the next Vertex, not a revenue collapse. Non-GAAP EPS was $4.76 versus roughly $4.82 consensus, while non-GAAP net income was essentially flat year over year at $1.21 billion. The filing attributes that offset to higher operating expenses, the Crinetics acquisition, launch investment for JOURNAVX, and higher interest expense after borrowing. “Non-GAAP net income was $1.2billion in each of the third quarters of 2026 and 2025.”
The guidance raise is real, but modest and bought with materially higher spending. Full-year revenue guidance increased by $50 million at both ends, while combined GAAP expense guidance jumped to $7.15-$7.20 billion from $6.30-$6.45 billion and non-GAAP expense guidance rose to approximately $6.0 billion from $5.65-$5.75 billion. The company explicitly says the increase reflects Crinetics operations and integration, renal-franchise investment and the JOURNAVX launch. “Vertex today raised its full year 2026 total revenue guidance to $13.15billion to $13.25billion from $13.1billion to $13.2billion previously.”
Crinetics is now operationally real, while the payoff remains ahead. Vertex closed the approximately $10.0 billion acquisition in September, creating a rare-endocrine commercial pillar and adding PALSONIFY revenue, but the quarter also brought roughly $500 million of acquisition-related compensation and transaction costs and $4.5 billion of new term borrowing. “In September, Vertex completed its previously announced acquisition of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals for a total equity value of approximately $10.0billion, or $9.0billion net of cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities acquired.”
The next decisive test is clinical and regulatory, not quarterly arithmetic. Povetacicept is under priority review for IgA nephropathy with a November 30, 2026 PDUFA date; approval would turn the renal strategy from an investment story into a commercial franchise. The filing states, “The BLA submission for accelerated approval of povetacicept in IgAN is under priority review by the U.S. FDA, with an assigned PDUFA target action date of November 30, 2026.” 〔0〕
Bottom line: Vertex delivered a revenue beat and modestly raised its top-line outlook, but the EPS miss shows diversification is currently consuming as much earnings power as it creates. The business story is advancing, though this quarter is mixed rather than cleanly ahead of expectations.
