Miss — Diluted EPS $0.36 vs ~$0.38 consensus; revenue $50.0M vs ~$52.1M consensus
NAPCO earnings show recurring service revenue accelerating, but equipment sales and cash flow weakened enough to produce a Q1 miss.
NAPCO is in the middle of shifting its mix toward high-margin recurring communications revenue: fiscal 2026 service revenue grew 13% to $97.5 million, versus 10% growth in equipment revenue, with recurring services carrying roughly 90% gross margins.
The quarter missed the market’s basic financial bar. Diluted EPS was $0.36 versus published consensus of about $0.38, while revenue was $49.98 million versus roughly $52.1 million expected. The miss was not a profitability collapse, but it shows the quarter did not deliver the growth pace investors were looking for.
| Metric | Q1 FY2027 | Q1 FY2026 | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue (Financial Highlights) | $49.98M (+1.7%) | $49.17M | ~$52.1M |
| Diluted EPS (Financial Highlights) | $0.36 (+5.9%) | $0.34 | ~$0.38 |
| Recurring service revenue (Financial Highlights) | $26.13M (+11.5%) | $23.43M | |
| Equipment revenue (Statements of Operations) | $23.85M (-7.3%) | $25.74M | |
| Gross margin (Financial Highlights) | 58.7% | 56.6% | |
| Free cash flow (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $2.32M (-79.8%) | $11.44M |
The recurring-revenue transition is still working, but it did not fully offset the hardware slowdown. Service revenue reached a quarterly record, its prospective annual run rate rose to approximately $106 million from $103 million reported in July, and gross margin expanded by 210 basis points. Equipment revenue, however, fell 7.3% because two locking distributors reduced purchases. 〔0〕
Cash conversion was the clearest weak spot. Free cash flow fell to $2.3 million from $11.4 million, while operating cash flow dropped to $2.8 million from $11.6 million. The filing attributes the operating-cash decline largely to working-capital movements, including a $15.0 million cash outflow across payables, accrued expenses, litigation costs, salaries and taxes; that makes the quarter’s accounting profit look better than the cash actually generated.
The balance sheet remains a cushion, not a new catalyst. Cash and equivalents were $123.9 million against total liabilities of $33.3 million at September 30, 2026, while the prior-year litigation burden had fallen out of current liabilities. That supports continued investment and the $0.17 quarterly dividend, but it does not erase the weaker sales and cash-flow performance this quarter. 〔1〕
Bottom line: NAPCO’s high-margin recurring engine is advancing, but not quickly enough to overcome the equipment revenue decline and sharp cash-flow deterioration. Against expectations, this is a modest setback rather than a broken business story.
Fiscal Q2 earnings report, expected early February
