Pathfinder Bancorp, Inc. (PBHC) · Nov 2, 2026 · Earnings
In line — Diluted EPS $0.32 vs $0.42 in Q2 and $0.10 in Q3 2025
Pathfinder Bancorp’s Q3 earnings show better credit quality and lower deposit costs, offset by weaker sequential profit, higher expenses, and more borrowing.
Pathfinder is a small Central New York bank working through legacy commercial-credit problems identified in its 2025 portfolio review while trying to rebuild relationship-based deposits and restart higher-quality commercial lending. Its prior plan already called for lower credit volatility and eventual loan growth after a large reserve build, so this quarter is mainly an execution check rather than a new strategic turn.

The credit cleanup is moving in the intended direction. Nonperforming loans fell to $30.3 million from $35.7 million in the second quarter, while the allowance for credit losses declined to $22.7 million from $26.9 million as previously reserved exposures were resolved. The quarter still carried $4.3 million of net charge-offs, but the company said those losses were fully covered by existing specific reserves.
Core banking economics improved sequentially, but not enough to offset operating pressure. Net interest income rose 1.7% from Q2 as the securities portfolio and higher commercial-loan yields helped, while the average cost of total deposits fell to 2.04%. But net interest margin was essentially flat at 3.07%, noninterest expense jumped to $9.4 million, and the efficiency ratio worsened to 78.13%. That leaves the bank making progress on funding costs while spending heavily ahead of the hoped-for commercial-loan recovery. 〔0〕
The balance-sheet transition is healthier in mix but more leveraged in execution. Total deposits continued to shrink because higher-cost time and brokered deposits were allowed to run off, yet core deposits held near $957 million and represented 82.6% of the base. The tradeoff is that borrowings rose to $155.5 million, up $22.2 million sequentially and nearly $99 million year over year, to fund securities purchases. That supports near-term income generation but makes the improvement more dependent on funding costs and rate conditions. 〔1〕
Profitability improved dramatically from the troubled year-ago quarter but slipped from the more recent recovery peak. EPS rose from $0.10 to $0.32 year over year as last year’s heavy provision burden faded, but it fell from $0.42 in Q2. With no dependable published consensus for this thinly covered bank, the fairest benchmark is the company’s own trajectory: credit metrics improved, but the earnings recovery did not progress in a straight line. The quarter therefore lands as mixed rather than a clean beat.
Bottom line: Pathfinder is steadily reducing the legacy credit overhang and improving its deposit mix, but Q3 shows the recovery still comes with higher costs, heavier borrowing, and uneven earnings momentum. The business story advances modestly, not decisively.
Commercial real estate loan funding expected to begin in Q4
