Kosmos Energy earnings miss as debt reduction stays on track

Miss — adj. EPS $0.06 vs ~$0.09 consensus; revenue $409.9M vs ~$426.9M

Kosmos Energy’s Q3 earnings missed consensus on adjusted EPS and revenue, though free cash flow and debt reduction continued to improve.

Kosmos is a highly leveraged deepwater producer trying to turn higher production, lower costs and GTA/Jubilee execution into balance-sheet repair. Its 2026 plan already centered on production growth, cost discipline and debt reduction, while the company was advancing GTA LNG, Jubilee infill drilling and selective Gulf of America growth.

The quarter missed the published earnings bar. Adjusted EPS of $0.06 trailed published estimates near $0.09, while revenue of $409.9 million was below consensus near $426.9 million. The miss was partly driven by derivative losses and weaker-than-expected reported revenue, so the headline result does not show the full operating improvement—but it is still a genuine miss rather than an in-line quarter.

The underlying cash story improved materially. Kosmos generated $90 million of quarterly free cash flow and $193 million year to date, versus negative free cash flow in the year-ago quarter. The company also reported three consecutive quarters of positive free cash flow, supporting its effort to reduce net debt toward below $2.4 billion by year-end.

Balance-sheet execution is now the main offset to the earnings miss. Net debt fell to approximately $2.47 billion from $2.98 billion at year-end, while the amended RBL facility extends final maturity to April 2033 and removes planned amortization payments until 2031. That refinancing reduces near-term liquidity pressure, but it does not eliminate the still-important 2028 bond maturity that management says it must address.

Operations were broadly on plan, not a new upside surprise. Total production averaged about 69,200 boepd, in line with guidance, while Jubilee delivered seven successful infill wells and GTA cargo liftings were slightly above guidance. These results support the existing turnaround plan, but because the direction was already expected, they do not offset the earnings and revenue shortfall enough to make the quarter positive versus expectations. 〔0〕

The outlook was maintained rather than upgraded. Fourth-quarter production guidance remains 60,000–64,000 boepd, and full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance is unchanged at approximately $350 million. The company is still targeting roughly 20% net debt reduction in 2026, but the next major balance-sheet test is refinancing the 2028 bonds rather than another operating milestone.

Bottom line: This was a modest earnings miss, but not a breakdown in the operating turnaround. Strong free cash flow, lower net debt and completed RBL refinancing keep the broader business story moving forward, while the 2028 maturities remain the unresolved constraint.
