Align Technology Inc (ALGN) · Oct 28, 2026 · Earnings
Beat — Non-GAAP EPS $2.80 vs ~$2.77 consensus; revenue $1.015B vs ~$1.00B
Align Technology’s Q3 earnings modestly beat consensus, with clear-aligner volume growth and margin gains offset by weaker digital systems and services.
Align is trying to turn Invisalign, iTero scanners, and exocad software into an integrated digital-dentistry platform, with clear aligners still the growth engine and scanners/software expanding the ecosystem. The quarter modestly beat the market’s bar, but not across every operating line. Published expectations were roughly $1.00 billion of revenue and $2.77 of non-GAAP EPS; Align delivered $1.015 billion and $2.80, respectively. Revenue and clear-aligner volume were also in line with management’s own outlook, making the surprise more about execution and margins than a major demand reacceleration. 〔0〕
| Metric | Q3'26 | Comparison | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $1,014.8M | +1.9% YoY; ~$1.00B consensus | Slight beat (Financial Highlights) |
| Clear-aligner shipments | 690,635 | +6.6% YoY | Volume growth continued (Financial Highlights) |
| Clear-aligner revenue | $839.3M | +4.2% YoY | Core business grew (Financial Highlights) |
| Imaging systems and CAD/CAM services | $175.5M | -7.6% YoY | Digital-platform weakness (Financial Highlights) |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $2.80 | $2.61 prior year; ~$2.77 consensus | Narrow beat (GAAP to Non-GAAP Reconciliation) |
| Non-GAAP operating margin | 24.4% | 23.9% prior year | Above prior outlook (GAAP to Non-GAAP Reconciliation) |
The core aligner franchise is holding up better than the broader dental spending environment. Shipments rose 6.6% year over year and doctor utilization increased 3.4%, while North American orthodontist shipments turned positive after six quarters. 〔1〕 That is meaningful progress against the softer discretionary-healthcare backdrop, but pricing and mix remain a drag: revenue per case shipment fell to $1,215 from $1,260 in Q2, helping hold clear-aligner revenue growth below volume growth. (Operational Metrics)
Profitability was the real upside, despite a weaker gross-margin mix. Non-GAAP gross margin was 70.4%, below management’s expectation because of transportation costs, lower aligner average selling prices, and geographic and product mix. Yet disciplined spending lifted non-GAAP operating margin to 24.4%, above prior guidance, and non-GAAP EPS rose 5.2% year over year. 〔2〕
The digital-platform leg remains the unfinished part of the story. Imaging Systems and CAD/CAM Services revenue fell 7.6% year over year, a sharper decline than the clear-aligner business and evidence that weaker capital-equipment spending is still pressuring iTero and related services. The new Sports Guard pilot and NXT 3D-printing platform broaden the opportunity, but they are still pilots and do not yet change near-term financial performance.
Management’s forward posture is steady rather than a demand-reset story. The company says Q4 reflects the same soft market conditions and that preliminary 2027 planning assumes no consumer recovery, while still targeting another year of revenue growth and margin expansion. That supports the earnings beat, but it also says the improvement is being driven more by execution, productivity, and aligner utilization than by a broad rebound in dental demand.
Bottom line: Align cleared a modest earnings bar because aligner volumes and cost control outweighed weaker digital-services sales. The business is improving operationally, but the broader digital-dentistry expansion remains less proven than the headline EPS beat suggests.
