In line — Diluted EPS $0.43 vs approximately $0.43 consensus
California BanCorp’s third-quarter earnings matched expectations, with loan and deposit growth offset by higher provisions, lower margin and weaker credit metrics.
California BanCorp is a relationship-focused California commercial bank expanding its loan footprint while building deposits across the state; the new San Francisco loan production office supports that Northern California push. The quarter shows continued balance-sheet growth, but profitability is being absorbed by credit costs and funding pressure. Published estimates were around $0.43 of third-quarter EPS, putting the reported result essentially in line rather than ahead of expectations.
The growth engine is still working. Loans including loans held for sale increased 1.7% sequentially to $3.16 billion, while deposits rose 3.5% to $3.48 billion. The opening of the San Francisco office adds capacity to that expansion, but it is an investment in future production rather than an immediate earnings driver.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diluted EPS (Financial Highlights) | $0.43 | $0.44 | $0.48 |
| Net income (Income Statement) | $14.0M | $14.3M | $15.7M |
| Pre-tax pre-provision income (Non-GAAP reconciliation) | $21.6M | $20.6M | $21.8M |
| Net interest margin (Net interest income and margin) | 4.61% | 4.71% | 4.52% |
| Provision for credit losses (Income Statement) | $3.2M | $0.7M | $(0.0)M |
| Total loans, including held for sale (Balance Sheet highlights) | $3.16B | $3.11B | $3.06B |
| Deposits (Balance Sheet highlights) | $3.48B | $3.36B | $3.37B |
| Nonperforming loans (Credit quality table) | $9.3M | $8.9M | $16.1M |
Underlying operating earnings improved, but reported earnings did not. Pre-tax, pre-provision income rose 5.3% sequentially as net interest income and noninterest income increased. That improvement was outweighed by the provision for credit losses, which jumped to $3.2 million from $714 thousand, leaving net income and EPS below the prior quarter and below the year-ago period.
The margin trend is moving the wrong way despite balance-sheet growth. Net interest margin fell 10 basis points sequentially to 4.61%, as asset yields declined and deposit costs edged higher. 〔0〕 Deposit growth is a positive franchise signal, but the mix shifted toward interest-bearing balances, and the company acknowledged increased competition for deposits. That means growth is currently requiring more funding expense rather than translating cleanly into margin expansion.
Credit costs are the main new complication. The $3.2 million loan provision included $4.6 million of net charge-offs, primarily from two commercial and industrial loans tied to an online advertising client whose business ceased operations. Nonperforming loans rose modestly to $9.3 million, while special-mention loans declined; the picture is therefore not a broad deterioration, but it is a reminder that the expanding commercial loan book can produce lumpy losses.
Capital and liquidity remain adequate, but tangible book value softened. The company redeemed $35 million of subordinated debt and remained above “well-capitalized” regulatory minimums, while tangible book value per share declined to $14.22 from $14.29. The decline reflected buybacks, dividends and a larger unrealized loss on available-for-sale securities, limiting the benefit of the quarter’s retained earnings.
Bottom line: This was an in-line earnings quarter with real loan and deposit momentum, but not a clean acceleration story. Growth is intact; higher credit costs, a lower margin and modest tangible-book-value pressure are the offsets that matter next.
Q4 earnings release, likely late January 2027
