EPS edged past estimates, but margin pressure and deposit outflows remain

RENASANT CORP (RNST) — what happened, in plain English, and what it means versus what the market expected.

The EPS result was a narrow beat, not a major earnings surprise. Diluted EPS came in at $0.94 versus published estimates around $0.91–$0.92, while total income on an FTE basis was $278.8 million, roughly in line to slightly below published revenue expectations near $280–$287 million. Underlying earnings were steady, but the quality of revenue was less impressive than the EPS headline. Adjusted net interest margin was flat at 3.61%, while reported NIM fell four basis points to 3.83%; adjusted loan yield also slipped to 6.03%. The quarter benefited from $12.3 million of accretable yield on purchased loans and $2.7 million of accelerated bond discount accretion, making the reported margin less representative of recurring spread performance. Loan growth was solid, but partly acquisition-driven rather than purely organic. Loans rose $220.9 million, or 4.7% annualized, with $58.3 million coming from a portfolio acquired by Republic Business Credit. Production and advances improved to $957 million and $901 million, respectively, but the filing does not separate the remaining growth cleanly enough to conclude that organic demand materially accelerated. Credit trends improved, reducing the downside risk in the quarter. Net charge-offs were only 0.06% annualized, criticized loans declined to 2.66% of total loans, and nonperforming loans fell nine basis points sequentially to 0.97%. Still, NPLs remain above the 0.76% level of a year earlier, so this is better stabilization rather than a complete normalization. (Asset Quality; Nonperforming Loans and Nonperforming Assets)

The net read is mixed because the EPS beat was offset by softer core banking momentum. Deposits fell $398.4 million, although $367.7 million was attributed to seasonal public-fund outflows; noninterest-bearing deposits also declined $145.4 million. At the same time, noninterest expense rose $6.2 million and the adjusted efficiency ratio worsened to 54.92% from 52.82%. The filing adds capital returns—a $60 million buyback and a dividend increase to $0.24—but offers no new outlook or guidance to re-rate expectations.
