Ironwood Pharmaceuticals Inc (IRWD) · Oct 16, 2026 · Exec change
CEO succession — Internal promotion; effective January 1, 2027
Ironwood’s CEO change promotes commercial chief Tammi Gaskins while Tom McCourt retires, preserving continuity through the LINZESS and apraglutide transition.
Ironwood is in a rebuilding phase: it is pushing a LINZESS commercial turnaround while funding the confirmatory STARS-2 trial for apraglutide, its main late-stage pipeline opportunity. In August, the company had raised 2026 guidance, with LINZESS U.S. sales expected at $1.15–$1.20 billion, while STARS-2 was actively recruiting.
This is an orderly succession, not a strategy reset. Ironwood is promoting Chief Commercial Officer Tammi Gaskins to CEO effective January 1, 2027. Her background maps directly onto the two operating priorities investors already know: commercial execution around LINZESS and development of apraglutide. The filing says she helped drive the LINZESS turnaround and led commercial development efforts for apraglutide, which makes the choice look like continuity with a new operator rather than a forced change.
McCourt’s departure is softened by continued board involvement. He is retiring after 17 years with Ironwood but will remain a director and is expected to consult for the company after the transition. 〔0〕 That reduces the risk of an abrupt loss of institutional knowledge, although it also means the handoff will be judged on whether Gaskins can move from commercial leadership to full-company leadership without slowing the apraglutide or LINZESS execution.
The compensation package is meaningful but not the central signal. Gaskins will receive a $775,000 base salary, a 75% target bonus, and approximately $4 million of target RSU and PSU grants. The package establishes substantial retention and performance incentives, but the filing does not indicate a change in capital allocation, pipeline priorities, or operating guidance.
Bottom line: Ironwood is replacing its CEO with an internal executive closely tied to the current turnaround, making this more a continuity event than a disruption. It modestly improves leadership clarity, but the business story still depends on LINZESS execution and STARS-2 progress rather than the succession itself.
CEO transition effective January 1, 2027
