Runway Growth portfolio update: repayments surge, lending slows

$130.9M net portfolio runoff — $139.4M liquidity events vs $8.5M fundings

Runway Growth’s portfolio update shows $139.4M of repayments against just $8.5M of new funding, while Marley Spoon remains a live credit issue.

Runway Growth is a venture-debt BDC in a deliberate shift from portfolio expansion toward optimization, repayments and share repurchases; management had already said it would pace net originations to prioritize repurchases. The quarter materially accelerates that repositioning. Runway funded only $8.5 million across four existing portfolio companies, while receiving $139.4 million through repayments and prepayments.

Portfolio activityQ3 2026Q2 2026 comparison
Fundings / originations$8.5M (Originations)$85.8M (Originations)
Liquidity events$139.4M (Liquidity Events)$36.5M (Liquidity Events)

The positive side is liquidity and credit realization. The repayments were concentrated in four full senior-secured loan exits, including $72.3 million from 3PL Central and $35.0 million from Route 92 Medical, which reduces exposure to those borrowers and gives Runway capital to redeploy or return to shareholders.

The offset is that the book is shrinking faster than it is being replenished. Q2 already established a lower-origination strategy, but the gap widened sharply from $85.8 million of fundings and $36.5 million of liquidity events in the prior quarter. That means the update supports near-term balance-sheet flexibility more than income-generation or portfolio growth; the eventual effect on earnings depends on how quickly the proceeds are redeployed.

Marley Spoon remains the unresolved credit complication. Runway converted approximately $28.9 million of unfunded commitments into an €8.1 million bridge loan and funded about $5.6 million during the quarter, while the borrower is cutting its workforce by 21% and pursuing financial sustainability. 〔0〕 〔1〕 This is not a clean new origination; it is an intervention in a stressed exposure, with liquidity still dependent on a successful restructuring or another path to exit.

Bottom line: This is a mixed portfolio reset: strong repayments improve liquidity and reduce selected exposures, but the $130.9 million net runoff shows Runway is shrinking the book while new lending remains cautious, with Marley Spoon still a material exception to the credit-first story.
