Walker & Dunlop, Inc. (WD) · Oct 6, 2026 · Exec change
COO departure — Retires March 31, 2027; duties divided among other employees
Walker & Dunlop’s executive change is orderly, with six months’ notice, but the filing names no successor as the COO role is divided.
Walker & Dunlop is expanding beyond mortgage finance into a broader commercial real estate finance and advisory platform, supported by servicing, asset management, investment banking, valuation and technology businesses; its new “Journey to ’30” plan is aimed at carrying that platform through 2030.
The transition is orderly, not abrupt. Stephen Theobald will remain executive vice president and chief operating officer until March 31, 2027, giving the company roughly six months to manage the handoff. The filing also says his decision was not related to a disagreement with the company. 〔0〕
The unresolved piece is succession. Walker & Dunlop names no replacement; instead, it says Theobald’s responsibilities will be divided among existing employees. 〔1〕 That reduces the signal of an immediate disruption but leaves unclear who will coordinate the wide operating portfolio behind the company’s next strategic phase.
Bottom line: This is a manageable, well-telegraphed leadership change rather than a crisis, but the lack of a named successor makes the eventual operating structure the key unanswered question for the business story.
