CFO succession — Internal successor with finance, M&A, strategy and operating experience
Chevron’s executive change moves CFO Eimear Bonner into its core Oil, Products & Gas business and names an internal finance successor.
Chevron is balancing growth in its core oil-and-gas portfolio with lower-carbon businesses and newer initiatives such as renewable fuels, hydrogen, lithium and power solutions. Its strategy remains to grow oil and gas while expanding new energies and lowering emissions.
The main change is a finance-to-operations handoff. Eimear Bonner will leave the CFO role to become President of Oil, Products & Gas, while Mark Nelson will retain the vice-chairman role and take responsibility for Strategy and Business Development. Both changes take effect January 1, 2027. 〔0〕 This puts a senior executive with technical, project and international operating experience closer to Chevron’s largest business, while concentrating Nelson on portfolio strategy and deal-making. Bonner has served as CFO since 2024, and Nelson currently oversees Oil, Products & Gas.
The CFO replacement favors continuity over a reset. Jeff Gustavson, Chevron’s current President of New Energies, becomes CFO and brings a long internal history spanning finance, mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning, investor relations, supply and trading, and upstream operations. 〔1〕 That background is a credible fit for a company managing a large upstream portfolio, post-Hess integration, cost reduction and selective lower-carbon investment—not an outside hire signaling a sharp change in capital policy.
The compensation disclosure is routine, not the signal.
| Item | Effective date | Filing figure |
|---|---|---|
| Gustavson base salary | January 1, 2027 | $1,000,000 |
| Gustavson target bonus | January 1, 2027 | 110% |
The filing does not disclose a new financial target, capital-allocation change or strategic transaction, so there is no earnings-style beat or miss to score. The read is therefore about leadership continuity and where management attention is being placed.
Bottom line: This is a meaningful but orderly succession: Chevron is moving an experienced CFO into its core operating engine and replacing him with an internal executive who understands both finance and new-energy development. It modestly reinforces execution continuity rather than changing the company’s strategy.
Leadership changes take effect January 1, 2027
