Workday is reallocating resources inside its enterprise HR, finance, and AI platform as AI becomes a larger part of new sales: AI drove more than 25% of new ACV in fiscal Q2, while more than 5,500 customers were using at least one organic agent. This is a targeted reset, not a retreat from growth. The cuts are concentrated primarily in Product and Technology, but Workday says it will keep hiring in strategic areas and locations. 〔0〕 〔1〕
| Item | Filing detail |
|---|---|
| Workforce reduction | Approximately 2.5% (reorganization disclosure) |
| Total charges | Approximately $65M-$80M (reorganization charges) |
| Q3 FY27 charges | Approximately $55M-$70M (reorganization charges) |
| Q4 FY27 charges | Approximately $10M (reorganization charges) |
| New Q3 FY27 GAAP margin gap | 20-21 percentage points below non-GAAP margin (guidance update) |
| New FY27 GAAP margin gap | Approximately 19 percentage points below non-GAAP margin (guidance update) |
The immediate financial effect is confined largely to GAAP presentation, but it is material. Workday is reiterating its third-quarter and full-year guidance except for GAAP operating margin, which will now sit roughly 20-21 points below third-quarter non-GAAP margin and about 19 points below the full-year non-GAAP margin because of the restructuring and lease charges.
The cost is partly a known efficiency tradeoff, but the workforce action itself is new. Workday had already been emphasizing resource allocation around AI, international expansion, partners, and newer customer segments; the Q2 update showed subscription revenue backlog still growing 14.2% year over year, supporting the case that this is a prioritization move rather than an emergency demand response. Still, the filing gives investors a concrete near-term cost for that pivot: $65 million to $80 million of charges, including cash severance and benefits, stock-based compensation, and leased-office impairments.
The business signal is mixed rather than cleanly negative. The restructuring sharpens focus on strategic growth areas and leaves non-GAAP guidance intact, but it also confirms that Workday is changing its operating footprint and accepting a substantial GAAP margin hit while it reallocates Product and Technology resources. The employee actions are expected to be substantially completed by the first quarter of fiscal 2028, with office reductions largely complete by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027. 〔2〕
Bottom line: Workday is trimming capacity to concentrate spending on AI and other growth priorities, not cutting its overall outlook. The event matters because it adds a real execution and morale transition while materially lowering reported GAAP margins in the next two quarters, even as the underlying guidance remains intact.
