AB is midway through a diversification push beyond traditional public-market management, building private alternatives, private wealth, active ETFs, insurance asset management and retirement-income capabilities. Its first-quarter 2026 materials highlighted $85 billion of private-markets assets, $155 billion in private-wealth assets and more than $16 billion in active-ETF assets, so the leadership question is whether that expansion continues without a strategic reset.
This is a planned internal handoff, not a strategy shock. Onur Erzan has already been AB’s president since January 2026 and oversees private wealth, private alternatives, distribution, strategy and corporate development. 〔0〕 That makes the succession more about execution continuity than a new direction. AB announced that Erzan will become CEO on April 1, 2027, while Seth Bernstein retires March 31, 2027 and remains on the board. 〔1〕
Erzan is closely tied to the growth areas AB needs to scale. The filing credits him with helping launch active ETFs, expand private credit and retirement-income solutions, build the insurance-asset-management vertical and broaden Bernstein’s ultra-high-net-worth business. That is strategically coherent with AB’s current push, but the filing does not provide new operating targets or evidence that the incoming CEO will accelerate growth.
Continuity comes with a substantial compensation commitment. Erzan’s 2027 total compensation target is $13.5 million, including $5.8 million in cash, $3.45 million of AB units and $2.35 million of Equitable Holdings equity. Bernstein also receives a $2.5 million appreciation grant, a $1.0 million Equitable award and $325,000 of salary continuation for staying through the transition.
| Compensation item | Amount | Filing reference |
|---|---|---|
| Erzan 2027 total compensation target | $13.5 million | Offer Letter |
| Erzan cash bonus | $5.8 million | Offer Letter |
| Erzan AB unit award | $3.45 million | Offer Letter |
| Erzan Equitable Holdings equity | $2.35 million | Offer Letter |
| Bernstein appreciation grant | $2.5 million | Retirement Agreement |
| Bernstein Equitable Holdings award | $1.0 million | Retirement Agreement |
| Bernstein salary continuation | $325,000 | Retirement Agreement |
Bernstein’s decade leaves a high base to protect. AB says assets under management nearly doubled to more than $919 billion during his tenure. The filing therefore frames the challenge correctly: Erzan inherits a scaled, more diversified platform, but must prove that the newer businesses can keep contributing after the architect of the transformation steps aside.
Bottom line: The succession is operationally reassuring because AB is promoting an already embedded executive into the role, but it is not an earnings or growth upgrade. The main new information is who will execute the existing strategy—and the sizable price attached to preserving continuity.
