The cleanest market benchmark was beaten. Adjusted diluted EPS was $0.25 versus a published Q2 estimate of roughly $0.18, while GAAP diluted EPS was $0.15 versus $0.11 a year earlier (Adjusted Diluted EPS reconciliation; Income Statement).

The underlying sales trend was weaker than the headline revenue suggests. Reported comparable-store sales rose 3.4%, but the company’s adjusted measure was only 2.2% after removing the benefit from unearned and deferred revenue; that fell below the prior 3.0%-6.0% full-year range and below the updated 3.0%-5.0% range (Comparable Store Sales reconciliation). Lower self-pay traffic and declines at Military and Fred Meyer locations remain the pressure points (Financial Highlights).
Margins, not demand, drove the upgrade. Adjusted operating income rose to $31.6 million, helped by lower SG&A and a 200-basis-point decline in SG&A as a percentage of revenue to 48.8% (Financial Highlights; Adjusted SG&A reconciliation). But costs applicable to revenue increased faster than sales, lifting that ratio by 60 basis points to 41.8% as the mix shifted toward higher-value products (Financial Highlights). The company also said the timing of unearned revenue added $2.9 million to quarterly adjusted operating income and $0.03 to adjusted EPS (Financial Highlights), so part of the quarter’s strength was timing-related rather than purely recurring.
The full-year guide is a quality upgrade, not a broad demand upgrade. Adjusted operating-income guidance increased at both ends, with the midpoint rising from $120 million to $129 million, while adjusted EPS guidance raised its floor from $0.85 to $0.94 but left the top at $1.09 (Fiscal 2026 Outlook). In contrast, the comparable-sales ceiling fell from 6.0% to 5.0% and the revenue range narrowed slightly lower at the midpoint (Fiscal 2026 Outlook). That combination says management sees more confidence in cost control and profitability than in near-term traffic growth.
Cash generation and buybacks add support but do not erase the demand caveat. Operating cash flow was $69.8 million for the first six months versus $86.5 million a year earlier, while inventory increased to $122.6 million from $89.3 million at year-end (Cash Flow statement; Balance Sheet). The company repurchased about 1.2 million shares for $20 million during the quarter, with $30 million remaining under authorization (Financial Highlights). Net: a genuine adjusted-EPS beat and a meaningful margin-led guidance raise, but against softer-than-target comparable sales and some favorable revenue timing—best characterized as a narrow beat rather than a clean acceleration.
